The Unicorn Turtle Wedding Soundtrack

This is the soundtrack from my Unicorn Turtle wedding at Acme Comedy Club, May 24th, 2015. We put a lot of thought into these songs. More thought than was put into selecting my dress, or choosing the flowers. Every song means so much to both of us, and I wanted to share them with everyone!

Our first song is called San Bernardino, by The Mountain Goats. The first concert Alex ever invited me to was a Mountain Goats concert. It was before we really even knew each other, and I wasn’t able to attend. When he invited me to this show, I went online to look up their songs and saw that they were all titled with Bible versus. This threw me off. I wondered, is Alex a hardcore christian music fan? We had a good laugh later. This was not the case. I was relieved! Alex loves the Mountain Goats, and so do I. Our cat’s name is Mountain Goat. We also love that this song involved road trips and California. It was a perfect song for our wedding processional.

The next song is Staralfur, By Sigur Ros. It took the longest to decide which song I would walk down the aisle to. I wanted it to be so many things. And it was. I knew walking down the aisle was going to be difficult without my dad, and I knew I would be crying. And I was. But at least with this song playing I could pretend that I was crying because I’d just seen a Jaguar Shark with Bill Murray in a submarine with his whole family. This is the song that plays at the end of Life Aquatic. A Wes Anderson movie that is a favorite of both of ours.

For the candle lighting ceremony we decided to go with Alone by Trampled by Turtles. It’s such a sweet love song with the perfect amount of melancholy. We love Trampled by Turtles. They are a Minnesota band, and one of the best live concerts we’ve ever gone to. We saw them at the State Fair in 2013 with a big group of friends and it was magical.

Getting to include Holland 1945 into our ceremony was delightful! We love this song, and we also love that Stephen Colbert loves this song. Alex, Jude and I took a road trip to New York to see the Colbert Report in 2010. It was an epic road trip, with snow, podcasts, Settlers of Catan and friends. An audience member asked Stephen what his favorite song was, and he played this song. It has a quick start and a fun energy. It was thrilling to walk down the aisle, a changed woman, a married woman, with this song blaring over the sound system. It was the first song we heard as Mr. and Mrs. Stein.

When we were looking for songs, we looked at a lot of Wes Anderson movie soundtracks and this song popped up. It’s called Les Champs-Elysees. We loved the vibe and immediately agreed it felt like something that would play during the credits. Which it probably does. So we included it in our playlist as our family members were leaving the comedy club showroom.

Selecting a first dance song was no easy task. We wanted something unique to us, with a beautiful message. We tried Mountain Goat songs, as beautiful as they sound, a lot of those songs are about death and sadness. That was actually a running theme. It turns out a lot of our favorite songs are pretty sad. We were quite happy when we tried this Decembrists song called Crane Wife 1 & 2. This song is one of Alex’s favorites and It always makes him cry. It’s an 11 minute song, which really is too long for a first dance song. Our dancing got stranger as the song went on. At one point we pretended to be unicorns and galloped around the dance floor. We instructed the DJ to fade out at around 5 minutes. It was a great first dance song and I hope you enjoy it as well.

Music is a big part of our lives, and we’re excited to have not just a song, but a whole playlist of music we can listen to, to relive our wedding day.

Thanks for reading and listening!
