My response to this article about self driving cars.
“It’s amazing to me that we let humans drive cars. It’s a bug that cars were invented before computers.”
i agree. however, If computers were invented first, would we really create a self driving car? I don’t think so…
We need to be more creative, and look at the real issue.
Why not a grid of smart tracks, that are elevated off the ground, that cars/pods can attach themselves to, and possibly supply energy to the cars. The tracks can monitor speed and make merging seamless. You just type where you want to go, and the pod/car gets on the appropriate tracks. The pods could drop you off and then be taken to a storage area. or heck we could all just share them! (we’re all so obsessed with owning things… it’s kind of gross.) The cars could also be synced up with trailer type pods to transport boats/four-wheelers/boxes whatever.
It would be more efficient, because you wouldn’t have to worry about how close you were to the car ahead, and wouldn’t have to adjust speed (2 second rule). and the tracks being elevated would save us tons of money and traffic issues with having to re-tar roads frikken every year. sure maintaining tracks would cost money too, but i think it would be a step forward.
we need a redesign of the roads… not just the cars… roads frikken suck.
